Urgent Restoration
Two fiber optic cables and two 1,500 pair copper cables were severed in early
November. Telephone service was unavailable from Kingfield to Coburn Gore, Maine, including Sugarloaf USA’s popular ski resort. An excavation contractor was digging in an area not within the scope of a Dig Safe ticket.
The contractor struck the lines which were approximately 200 feet from the telephone company’s central office. Destruction of this major artery caused extensive loss of service.
All of On Target’s telephone and fiber technicians responded to the
call for help
established by a maintenance contract with TDS. Working through the
night, crews
implemented a temporary fix to restore service by 3:00 pm the
following day. Progress was challenged by knee-deep mud and slippery
conditions. Technicians have returned to the site to reroute
entrance cable to the central office and permanently correct the
damage. Members of the Locating Division were also present to
complete a damage investigation
